You can’t really feel fat, not on Facebook atleast. Yes, Facebook has removed ‘Feeling Fat’ from the status options and replaced it with ‘Feeling Stuffed’. Out of Hundreds of Millions of People who use Facebook, On the Request of about 17000 signatories on a Petition Filed by Endangered Bodies, a group campaigning against negative body image on Change.org.
There has been a sudden outrage on Social Media specially Facebook where a lot of people were seen talking about the Petition having opinion both, for and against it.
Graduate student Catherine Weingarten, who said she had suffered from an eating disorder, was one of a number of ambassadors for the petition. Writing on the Change.org petition, Ms Weingarten said, “When Facebook users set their status to ‘feeling fat,’ they are making fun of people who consider themselves to be overweight, which can include many people with eating disorders. That is not ok. Join me in asking Facebook to remove the ‘fat’ emoji from their status options”.
She further added “Fat is not a feeling. Fat is a natural part of our bodies, no matter their weight. And all bodies deserve to be respected and cared for.”
To which Facebook response is:
“We’ve heard from our community that listing ‘feeling fat’ as an option for status updates could reinforce negative body image, particularly for people struggling with eating disorders. So we’re going to remove ‘feeling fat’ from the list of options.”
Responding to the decision by Facebook, Ms Weingarten said: “I’m thrilled that Facebook decided to remove the ‘feeling fat’ emoji. This success shows us that people together can challenge the cultural messages that are so damaging to our ability to love ourselves and live comfortably in our bodies.”
