Netflix, America’s popular VOD service, is testing a new feature that helps users to watch and stay connected with favorite shows called an “Extras” tab in its mobile app. The tab is first spotted by Variety, and is still under testing and not visible to users.
It was observed that on Android, this is currently the “Coming Soon” section whereas in iOS doesn’t have this section. Apart from teaser trailers as before in “Coming Soon,” users can find both photos and videos from Netflix shows.
As you know, videos automatically play in silent mode unless you tap the sound button and can also move through the feed horizontally. It is a notable change from the “Coming Soon” section’s News Feed-like vertical scroll, and one that feels more like Instagram Stories.
It also offers a sizable sharing button allowing users to move along recommendations to friends via other apps.
It seems like Netflix has drawn ideas from popular social platforms like Instagram Stories-like feature for previews and also leveraged the platform for sharing recommendations as of Instagram Story integrations. The new feature combines both elements to make it popular among users.
The company confirmed the test with the American media reports in a statement:
