Facebook to delete 1 million accounts ahead lok sabha elections 2019

Facebook on Monday announced it is removing or blocking approximately one million offensive accounts a day via Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Ajit Mohan, Facebook MD, and VP, India in a blog post stated that,

“We are absolutely committed to maintaining the integrity of the elections in India and will continue to work with local organizations, government groups, and experts to make that happen.”

The social media titan has been working for more than 18 months now to assure the Indian elections are fair enough without intervening of domestic and foreign.

He also added, “This work is done across dozens of teams, both in India and around the globe, and began more than 18 months ago with a detailed planning and risk assessment across our platforms.”

Facebook has recently launched two new products to assist people in learning about issues and engage with candidates and elected officials in India.

The two products-

  1. Candidate Connect- Designed to provide voters accurate data and enable people to learn more about the candidates.
  2. Share You Voted- Developed for people to share with closed ones to show that they’ve cast their ballot.

The teams include operations specialists, engineers, and data scientists who will work with the staff in Facebook’s headquarters, Menlo Park, California, and as well with experts in Delhi.

Facebook is planning to continue the expansion by adding 24 new languages by including 16 for India to their automatic translation system.

Last week Facebook removed around 700 Groups, accounts, and pages in India on the violation terms of its policies calling it as “coordinated inauthentic behavior” and spam.
