Flipkart launched Flipkart Supermart, an online grocery store in Mumbai. The city is the fifth market for the company’s grocery arm. The platform previously launched in Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
The company is planning to collaborate with farmers, producer organizations, and local MSMEs to develop a sustainable ecosystem and jobs.
The company with the launch of the Flipkart Supermart provides free delivery on orders above Rs 600. It also set up a supply chain separately for groceries in Mumbai which involves fulfillment centers and last-mile delivery network.
In August 2018, Flipkart entered into the online grocery platform with its Supermart. Initially, it was available only in Bengaluru started with a minimum order amount of Rs 500 and free delivery of orders above Rs 1000.
The e-commerce giant offers products like staples, FMCG, and dairy products; and also with the other private labeled products.
Flipkart seems to be exploring ways to sustain its business. Recently, the company is exploring a hybrid online-offline model with a target to sell smartphones through 15,000 convenience stores, bakeries, pharmacies, and beauty salons.
Flipkart was reported to be in talks to acquire Bengaluru-based grocery chain Namdhari Fresh to expand its offline reach and enhance its grocery delivery business.
