Hyderabad airport gets Face Recognition system

Hyderabad Airport initiated Face Recognition (FR) System at the entry point for the first time in India. The is a pilot project launch as a part of DigiYatra programme to examine the Face Recognition system.

Authorities are testing the system at the airport entry points and will extend to all the security check levels allowing all the passengers to board using his/her face. The trails started on July 1 and will extend till July 31, 2019.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) representative said,

“As many as 180 passengers voluntarily signed up for FR, though 70% used it on the Day 1 and the numbers are certain to increase.”

The facility is sure to the passengers with hand baggage flying to Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

“If the pilot is successful, it will be used for security checks as well. Instead of displaying the boarding pass, passengers can just look into the camera to ascertain their credentials. If found genuine, the system will automatically clear their passage towards boarding.”

To attain the facility of FR, a passenger should register at counters of domestic departure gates between 8 am and 8 pm by showing a valid government ID, contact details, and his/her face captured by a camera.

After this first process, a CISF personnel checks the ID proof generating a unique DigiYatra FR ID. An enrolled passenger can go through an exclusive e-gate and get his card scanned with the FR camera and verify the credentials along with the itinerary.

This process is a one-time step and no need of again starting it from scratch once a passenger returns from the destination at the entry gates.

Because it is a trial phase, a CISF personnel, however, verifies the travel docs and ID details of FR-registered passenger at the departure gate.
