The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization responsible for the Internet’s Domain Name System management all over the world, has been working on supporting domain names in numerous Indian languages.
The organization is currently working on nine Indian scripts including Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu. Stated by ICANN India head Samiran Gupta
The move aims to connect people with no knowledge of English with the internet. In order to get content in the regional language, people don’t have to enter the URL in English. Which means one will now be able to enter the domain in Hindi to get Hindi content, instead of the current practice of typing a domain name in English for the purpose.
Searching content in regional languages is already possible in Google and other search engines. The current effort is focused on enabling the domain names in regional languages, which in turn would enable the system to publish local language content being searched.
