Facebook gets penalized with $5 Billion for breaching of consumer privacy

Facebook fined $5 billion

Facebook always goes to a detention room for breaching its customers’ privacy issues. This time it created a record by getting fined $5 billion imposed by the US Federal Trade Commission. This is the substantial penalty ever in the world. Now Facebook has to heed upon new restrictions to make it answerable about users’ privacy.

FTC releases a press statement that,

“The $5 billion penalty against Facebook is the largest ever imposed on any company for violating consumers’ privacy and almost 20 times greater than the largest privacy or data security penalty ever imposed worldwide. It is one of the largest penalties ever assessed by the US government for any violation.”

The new order is to restructure the approach to privacy concerns from the corporate board-level down. It has to make robust mechanisms about the privacy of consumers.

Joe Simons, FTC Chairman in a statement

“The magnitude of the $5 billion penalty and sweeping conduct relief are unprecedented in the history of the FTC. The relief is designed not only to punish future violations but, more importantly, to change Facebook’s entire privacy culture to decrease the likelihood of continued violations. The Commission takes consumer privacy seriously, and will enforce FTC orders to the fullest extent of the law.”

FTC reports that more than 185 million people in and around the United States and Canada use Facebook, and the company monetizes by targeting advertisements and other targets. Last year, Facebook nearly generated $55.8 billion in revenue with the business advertisings.

After a yearlong probing by the FTC, they filed the company under privacy preferences in violation of its 2012 FTC order. The company following the targeting strategy has shared users’ data with third-party apps where users are unaware of such information.

A separate law enforcement actions were charged against Cambridge Analytica company former CEO Alexander Nix, and Aleksandr Kogan is an app developer worked in the company for using false and deceptive methods by encroaching person information from millions of Facebook users.

Amid Google trying to woo its billion users, Facebook is echoed with boos from public constantly. If Facebook not taking any serious steps and mechanisms may have ample reasons not to use Facebook in future.
